ShapeA shape is defined as an area with clear boundaries. Shapes can be seen as rectangles, triangles, etc. or even organic shapes, which are free flowing. The picture below displays a leaf in the shape of a heart. This picture includes static shapes, which are shapes that appear resting. Because they are leaves, they are not moving, which is what makes them static shapes rather than dynamic shapes, or shapes that appear to be moving. | FormForm is very similar to the element of shape, in a way where form displays a various amount of shapes. However, with form, the shape is seen as 3D rather than 2D. The picture above conveys the element of form through the fact that it displays the shape of a rectangle (a "push" button on a water fountain.) Though the picture shows a rectangle, this picture conveys the element of form rather than shape because you are able to see the depth of the object, making it 3D rather than 2D. |
LineThere are many different types of lines. There are curly lines, zig-zag lines, curvy lines and of course, straight lines. The picture above conveys the concept of the element of line through the fact that is exhibits both horizontal and vertical, straight lines. The door represented above has many horizontal lines shown in the middle of it, while the vertical lines away from the middle tells us where the door comes to an end. While this picture displays the concept of line, it also shows the element of shape, for the horizontal and vertical lines connect to form very long rectangles. ValueValue is associated with both contrast as well as being gradient. Contrast is basically when a bright color is contrasted with dark color. Value expressed on a gradient scale is basically when a lighter color blends into a darker color. The picture above demonstrates the element of value through the gradient scale. This is because the color of the model's hair is blending. As it starts off with a dark brown/black color, it moves into a lighter brown and then finally into what looks like a darker version of blonde. | SpaceNegative Space can be defined as empty space around and between the sculptures or subject of the picture. The subject of the picture below is the simple white flower in the middle of the picture. The picture overall represents the element of space due to the fact that it has a lot of empty or "negative" space that surrounds the simple white flower. Though there are two yellow branches that surround the flower as well, most of the flowers' surroundings include complete emptiness. TextureThe element of texture can basically be defined as a picture that demonstrates what a certain subject feels like. The picture above displays the element of texture mainly through the subject of the leaves. Because the plant is shown close up, you are able to see the veins on the leaf and how they create bumps and ridges throughout itself. Along with this plant is another one that seems to look smooth for there are no veins to be seen. Surrounded by both of these plants are rocks and dirt. These things create the feel of texture because you can slightly see how rough the environment around truly is. |
Color
There are many different things to consider when looking at color. With color comes primary (red, yellow, blue), secondary (orange, green, purple), tertiary (red-orange, yellow-green, etc.), warm and cool colors. The picture above displays the element of color is a sort of subtle way for the colors shown seem somewhat warm. Above, you are able to see slightly orange leaves, spots of dark red and of course browning branches and dirt. Though not all primary, secondary, tertiary, etc. colors are shown in this one picture, you are able to see both different types of shades of one color as well as different colors in general.
